However, for years, there was another side to this scene—a silent byproduct building up behind the scenes: tons of olive pits. Once the oil was extracted, the remaining hard, woody pits were generally viewed as industrial fuel. That was simply the way it had always been done. We burned them to generate energy, reducing mountains of organic material to ash.

It took a completely different problem, inside our own home, to make us realise we were burning a precious resource.

"We Had Been Burning the Answer"

The creation of Oligatto did not start in a boardroom; it began in our living room. As an engineer and a mother, I (Çerağ) was struggling to find a solution for a persistent household issue. My husband and young daughter both live with asthma, and we share our home with several beloved cats. Over time, I noticed a troubling pattern. The product we relied on to keep our home hygienic—traditional clay cat litter—was quietly compromising our air quality.

The microscopic dust from ordinary clumping clay didn’t just settle on the furniture; it lingered in the air and, inevitably, in our lungs. Our cats were not faring any better, experiencing watery eyes and shallow breaths. The very product meant to manage waste was generating an aerosolised particulate problem.

One day, while looking at the massive mounds of discarded olive pits at the Orfion mill, the pieces finally clicked together. Conventional clay litter is dusty because clay is brittle and breaks down under friction. Olive pits, by contrast, are botanically dense, incredibly hard, and inherently non-brittle. They are naturally porous, highly absorbent, and structurally dust-free.

Two distinct problems—respiratory irritation at home and agricultural byproducts at the mill—sat on opposite sides of our daily lives. We had the perfect, inert material right in front of us. We had literally been burning the answer.

Behind the Scenes: The Engineering of a Sustainable Cat Litter

Transforming a raw agricultural byproduct into a premium, high-performance olive pit cat litter requires a careful blend of natural respect and mechanical engineering. Here is exactly how we take the pits from the olive mill to your cat’s tray:

1. Expert Sourcing and Uncompromising Quality Control

Our absolute greatest advantage in this industry is our deep-rooted background as olive oil producers. While we utilise the pits generated from our own Orfion production, the demand for our litter means we also source raw materials from a network of trusted regional mills. Because we understand the extraction process inside and out, we have complete control over the quality of our raw material. We know exactly what to look for regarding moisture levels, extraction methods, and the structural integrity of the pomace. This producer-level expertise allows us to rigorously audit every batch, ensuring only the most pristine, high-quality olive pits enter our manufacturing cycle.

2. Mechanical Separation and Cleansing

The raw material arrives as a mixture of crushed pits and residual olive pulp. To create an effective litter, we must isolate the hard shell. Using advanced mechanical separators, we isolate the pits and thoroughly wash them using only water. We never use harsh chemical solvents or bleaching agents. This ensures the material remains entirely natural and safe for feline use.

3. Precision Thermal Drying

Moisture control is the cornerstone of any highly absorbent sustainable cat litter. Once cleaned, the pits enter our specially calibrated drying kilns. Our engineering team strictly monitors the temperature and duration of this phase. If the pits are too dry, they lose their natural structure; if they retain too much moisture, they cannot absorb cat urine effectively. We bring them to the precise optimal moisture content required for maximum absorbency.

4. Granulation for Paws and Lungs

This is where the true "dust-free" magic happens. The dried pits are milled into specific granular sizes. Unlike clay, which pulverises into fine, inhalable silica dust when crushed, the woody matrix of the olive pit breaks down cleanly. We calibrate the grinding process to produce a granule size that is soft and comfortable on delicate cat paws, whilst maintaining a high surface area for rapid absorption. Because of the material's integrity, this process yields a structurally dust-free granule.

5. Natural Formulation and Clumping

To provide the tight, scoopable clumps that modern cat owners expect, we blend our granulated olive pits with exclusively natural, plant-based binders. We refuse to add synthetic fragrances, chemical clumping agents, or artificial dyes. The result is a clean, earthy product that neutralises odours naturally through its porous structure.
